Why ? : The story of a duel between Mr Mind and Br. Heart
In this poem, Mr MIND personifies Manas, the ego-centric
seat of attachments and aversions. Brother HEART, on the
other hand, stands for the soul-guided intellect (Atma-prakashit
Buddhi) whose intuitive wisdom matures into divine, selfless love.
Both wisdom and love (founded in a realization of the unity of all
life, manifesting as devotion to the One Omnipresent Spirit and
working through disinterested love and equal empathy for all creation)
are attributes of every soul, at least potentially, and their full
evolution is the ultimate goal of all life on earth.
Haughtily aware of his intelligence
But comfortably ignorant of his limitations and inconsistencies
Despaired and argued aloud -
Why are you so crazy about God ?
In a progressive world
Striving to achieve ever greater and greater prosperity,
Why should anyone be so unsmart as to run after God ?
In a period of the definite and the well-defined,
Is it not ridiculous that you waste your precious hours
Seeking the infinite and the abstract ?
In a world of such brilliant relativities,
Why should anyone want to seek
The cold and dull absolute ?
And, in an era in which
We are trying to reach farther and farther, faster and faster
Into the distant space,
Why should you be so retrograde as to want to go back within ?"
After he had heard his brother speak so virulently,
Paused for a while, smiled and then, softly but confidently,
With the conviction of one
Who does not guess or infer, but sees and knows the truth as it
Thus catechised Mr MIND : -
You have always been proud of your knowledge, haven't you ?
But has it ever occurred to you that
The intelligence and knowledge of even those
Who are considered to be the most intelligent and knowledgeable
of you all,
Have but been too feeble to come anywhere near understanding
The Cosmic Intelligence with which God, the Ultimate Source,
Hast conceived, brought forth and sustained this universe
Including you and me ?
The truth is that, my friend,
Few of us indeed have even that minimum intelligence
With which we could have realised
How unintelligent we really are !
"You talk of matter and material prosperity with such fondness
But is not all matter
Only a frozen dream of the one and the same Omnipresent Spirit ?
And concerning your great inclination towards defining everything,
Tell me if you have ever been able to define and explain
In your woefully limited medium of human languages
That mysterious void whence everything tangibly living comes
And into which, carried on the wings of what you plainly call DEATH
All that is born has to vanish one day ?
"Day and night you see myriad hues and colours on the earth and
in the sky
But did a question ever appear to you
As to who paints such glow on the spinning earth
Or plays with coloured light in the sky ?
Will you enjoy and admire the cosmic paintings
But never even admit that there is a Cosmic Painter ?
"How thankless indeed to go on relishing, for ever if one could,
all the gifts of His
And yet never pause for a while to thank Him, the Giver of the gifts
How deaf indeed to be born of the WORD *
And yet never even try to listen to it ? Have we not ears and eyes
in vain, my brother ?
"Is it not a matter of great ridicule that
In this proud era of phenomenal scientific advancement
We have almost any speed that we may need, but no or little sense
of direction ?
And that we have more and more medicines but poorer and poorer health
More and more conveniences but less and less time for ourselves
Can we really pride that amidst all our tremendous prosperity
Millions of starving and naked children still have their pale, peering
Miserably coaxing their lone reliever DEATH ?
And that we have got ourselves unavoidably seated
On a pile of deadly atom boms and missiles
To kill ourselves several times over, as if once was not enough
And finally, that our scientists and most gifted discoverers keep
Looking into the tiniest atom but never care to look within, where
all wisdom is hidden ?"
By now, after some initial discomfiture
Mr MIND was listening in awed silence.
He was shamed on one hand by his own vanity
And on the other by the now-understood mercy of the All-powerful
As brought home by his friend, Br HEART.
Such was the weight of Mr MIND's remorse that he fell down.
And, lo behold ! There he was at the feet of The Mother Divine.
Gently, She lifted him up in Her arms and comforted him.
All his sin dissolved in Her measureless love,
The little rivulet of his childlike compunction
Joyfully dissolving in the ocean of Her motherly forgiveness !!

Nadavaf for the holy sound of Aum, or from the Bible, in the beginning
was the WORD, the Word was with God, and the Word was God etc ).
